"If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work".
Thich Nhat Hanh
Are your thoughts positive or negative? Do you know what your attitude is capable of doing in other peoples lives? Let me briefly relate to you a story which I read a short while ago. The story revolved around three people, a businessman, a newspaper vendor, and Gail Pursell Elliott who actually wrote the story.
Over 25 years ago Gail was travelling in a bus to work on a really bad day. The whether was bad and everybody was wilting. He was sitting next to a businessman who came down of the bus at the same stop as Gail. They both walked to the news stand to get newspapers of the day. The newspaper vendor who was also having a bad day, was not so nice to both of them. He was rude, abrupt and not smiling. His attitude fuelled Gail's bad feelings for that day. However the businessman was just nice to the newspaper vendor, he smiled brightly to the newspaper vendor and was thankful to him for opening his shop that early, on a gloomy day like that so that they can get their newspaper. Despite the nice attitute of the businessman, the newspaper vendor just grunted and had a sour expression on his face. The businessman wished him a pleasant day and they left. Gail then asked the business man why he has been so nice to the vendor eventhough he was not so friendly, The business man grinned at him and said " Why would I let someone else control what I say and what I feel or what kind of day I'm going to have?' His answer changed Gail's life for good. He said, even though it has now been over 25 years, he still remembers the words of the businessman and his smile, which was like a shaft of light on a gloomy day.
